Los Hongos
Óscar Ruiz Navia - 2014
Every night after work, Ras paints graffiti on walls around his neighborhood in Cali. During the day he’s a construction worker and the son of Maria, a sweet mulatto woman who migrated to the city from the Pacific jungle. One day Ras loses his job after getting caught stealing the cans of paint he’s been using to create a mural in the empty lot next to his house. Now unable to contribute any money to his mother’s household, he crosses the city in search of CALVIN, another graffiti artist and art school student who is going through a difficult period following his parents’ divorce and his grandmother’s battle with cancer. The boys wander off into the city, as if set on getting lost forever. Along the way, like a couple of mushrooms, they contaminate the lives of those they meet with enormous freedom, leaving their memories and desires behind on the walls they paint as they go.
