BRUMA

Image and imagination are two words that share the same etymology. The first one comes from the Latin word imago, which means “copy, likeness, imitation”, and the second, from imaginari: creating a mental figure. 

 

Moving images are, therefore, a way to imagine and materialize possible worlds and to inhabit them, even if ephemerally; making them appear in that blurred frontier between what we consider real and fictional, what we deem tangible and what seems impossible. This is the link BEN RIVERS proposes, based on imagination as a space for creation, but, more importantly, based on an ability to watch closely and attentively. The creative potential emerging from the immanence and permanence of an image makes its universe a multiform space in which frontiers are dissolved.

 

MIST is a brief tour through the ideas that have populated the cinematographic and visual oeuvre of BEN RIVERS: possible worlds created from a permanent questioning of reality and its fictional reflection, through evocative imagery, temporalities that allow for the emergence of ideas and the creation of alternative images, characters that move through the “real world” from un-imagined places. Singular worlds, but not unreachable ones if you look closely.

 

His body of work is a call from time itself, and from the ideas it fuels in the audience; an invitation to create new forms of existing and of perceiving our existence. These five works are connected with the film program in theaters, and in each one of them the same hazy limit transforms our temporal experience into a new idea.
